Flamenco and Horses: A Historic Connection

Flamenco and horses share a deep-rooted history in Andalusian culture. Traditionally, during festivals, for example Feria del Caballo and Feria de Abril, Andalusian horsemen (jinetes) would escort women to the celebrations, with the women riding a la grupa—seated side-saddle style behind the rider on a sheepskin pad placed on the horse’s croup.

Dressed in their stunning traje de flamenca (flamenco dresses), the women would arrive at the festival in spectacular fashion, often dancing sevillanas upon arrival, blending equestrian tradition with flamenco’s vibrant energy.

This powerful relationship between flamenco and horses continues today, both in traditional Andalusian celebrations and in modern performances.

Karina’s Equestrian Flamenco Performances

Karina is herself ahorsewoman, andloves combining this with flamenco. Karina has performed at prestigious equestrian events, including the Festival of the Iberian Horse, where she danced alongside Spanish champion equestrian José Rodrigo Cívico and the graceful natural horse woman Rebecca Harris. At Blenheim palace horse trials she performed with ‘Spectacle of Equitation’ show, with stunt rider Freddie Steele & his team.
